La courte échelle publishing house was created in 1978 by the writer Bertrand Gauthier. It is the first publishing house in Quebec to devote itself exclusively to children's literature and is one of the pioneers in the field of children's books along with Éditions Paulines, Pierre Tisseyre and Héritage.

Inspired by the European dynamism in children's literature, Gauthier wants to "put Quebec on the world's pulse" and intends to publish original, powerful and contemporary works written by local authors. The community's enthusiasm is immediate and the catalogue is quickly enriched with works for all age groups: all-cardboard, albums, documentaries, first readings, children's and teen novels.
